The works for the construction of a noise barrier on the B 21 and the rehabilitation of two bridges over a footpath and a municipal road in the district of Wöllersdorf in the course of the B 21 have been completed.

On 26 August 2020, Provincial Councillor Ludwig Schleritzko, on behalf of Provincial Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner, completed the newly erected noise barrier and the two bridge renovations on the B 21 in Wöllersdorf, and the new SILE&SAFE noise protection system from MABA (a company of the Kirchdorfer Group) was finally handed over to its intended use. Regional Mobility Councillor Ludwig Schleritzko: “In addition to increasing traffic safety on our roads and bridges, it is also important to me to relieve the residents from traffic.

Since 1993, there have been efforts and endeavours by the municipality to take measures against the ever-increasing noise along the B21 to protect the immediate neighbours. The need for noise protection measures was already proven in an acoustic measurement programme in 1997. However, financing could not be established, also due to the very expensive solutions at the time.

In 2017, Mayor Gustav Glöckler made another attempt to implement the project together with the province of Lower Austria and MABA after all the necessary impact and safety tests of the new SILE& SAFE system were successfully completed – the product was convincing! The small element width of only 68cm as well as the already realised pilot project along the B145 near Untergrimming finally convinced the municipality and the province of Lower Austria to realise the noise protection measure with the Sile&Safe system.

SILE&SAFE®

The Sile & Safe® products combine the function of a noise barrier with that of a vehicle restraint system.

The advantages of Sile&Safe® technology:

  • Extremely space-saving, cost-effective integration of noise and impact protection.
  • High shielding effect due to proximity to the sound source
  • Quick installation of the unanchored, freely movable elements
  • All systems comply with ÖNORM EN 1317 – Restraint systems on roads

Also due to the already very long history, a partnership solution could be found with the province of Lower Austria. The Lower Austrian Road Service prepared the substructure along the B21 for the construction of the noise protection system. This noise barrier was erected along the built-up area of Wöllersdorf north of the B21 starting from the Fischaberg junction up to the level of the Lange Äcker houses over a length of 1,200 metres. The costs for this noise barrier are borne by the municipality, with the Province of Lower Austria covering the costs of about € 160,000 for the construction of the substructure. After all project approvals had already been obtained in autumn 2019, two bridge support structures located in the project section were repaired this year by the province of Lower Austria – the two bridge objects (over footpath and municipal road) had to be reinforced due to the additional loads of the noise barrier – and finally the asphalting work was completed at the end of July.

Subsequently, the installation of the Sile&Safe elements could be started in the night from 4 to 5 August and completed on 11 August. Thus, Wöllersdorf is shielded from road noise by a 2m high noise barrier over a length of 1.2 km. The highly absorbent design on both sides also reduces the noise of the rail traffic that takes place just behind our noise barrier. The Sile&Safe system is one of a total of 3 systems developed so far by MABA for the low-ranking road network and follows the motto “We make our roads SAFE”. The development of this product was supported by the Research Promotion Agency.

In the end, it was a modern and innovative product, a cooperative relationship between the local politicians and their companies, coupled with the support of the province of Lower Austria, which together lead to success.
